Flywheel balance weight testing and its effect on flywheel wobble.

then removed all balance weights. The flywheel period was then definitely worse and was spread over a wider range of speed. We then fitted the 6 balance weights. With these we considered it was slightly improved over no balance weights, but certainly not as good as the 12 balance weights.

We have got more investigation to do on this flywheel period because the flywheel and crankshaft which is now fitted to 16-G4 was removed from the unit which had the cast iron crankcase and in that unit, even with no balance weights, it was very much smoother than it is now.

We are carrying out further tests on the test bed to see how our pictures of flywheel wobble are effected by balance weights.

The results we have obtained do not alter the fact that we still require balance weights in order to reduce wear.
