R.R.A.I. ALTERATION REPORTS. CARBURETTER SEC. 5080.

Referring to OY9/ of May 7th, we have looked into this matter and made some experiments because we were under the impression that the job does not demand the accuracy assumed to be necessary in America.

We have altered certain of our positions from which we dimension, since as a matter of correctness of limiting the R.R.A.I. point of view is the right one.

In order to demonstrate that the design was very flexible and did not demand closely limiting, we had springs produced of 68 ozs., 72 ozs. and 75 ozs., the latter being well beyond our limit, and handed them to the Test Department, who fitted the three springs in rotation to one car on one day and covered the same ground. The Test Dept. were unable to find any difference either in consumption or acceleration.

In regard to the position of the bottom of the air port, this is allowed for by adjusting the disc at the bottom of the high speed jet.

We have experienced no difficulty in producing carburetters without closely defining the limits.

We had considered, but turned down without experiment, the suggestion to use aluminium copper alloy for the air valve housing, as it is essential to have a relatively hard and smoothly polished surface for inside of same.

We note that since writing the memo under discussion OY. has found trouble arising and cancelled the proposal.
