S.U. Petrol Pumps.

During my visit to the S.U. Co. yesterday the question of faulty pumps was discussed and to what extent the S.U. Co. are liable in the repair of these.

It appears that in the past when pumps were returned to them as faulty, they simply rectified the faults and returned to us, but evidently we would not accept them because they were perhaps not 100% finish, as they were when new.

Since then the S.U. Co. have had to strip down every pump returned to them, remove enamel from casings, return the casings to us to be re-anti-corrosion treated, re-enamel the casing, re-assemble the pump and fit various new components such as points, etc. This has been done regardless of age or mileage the pumps have covered, and also has been done free of charge.

One example is that they have in one or two instances received pumps which are two years old, and which, say, have been returned to them because of a leaking diaphragm. According to the S.U. Co. we will not accept these back unless they have been completely brought up to 100% finish so that they can be fitted to a new chassis if desired. This of course is an expensive item to them.

Probably this could be overcome if our various service stations carried a stock of service pumps so that in the event of a failure, a service pump could be fitted until such time that the customer's pump had been rectified. It would only then be necessary for the S.U. Co. to rectify the fault and return the pump, the finish of the enamel, etc., being left as it was when received by them.

Yesterday I was shown 12 pumps received from our various Depots for repair. 10 of these had been sent without any idea of the nature of the trouble, this again of course means a complete overhaul.
