-2- HS{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/ACL.1/MJ.30.12.30 Contd. 15% of the total drag it would appear that there was little attempt to save in this respect. On the other hand there was a marked tendency with the large passenger machines to use disappearing under-carriages which folded into the wings - such as the Bleriot. Particular Machines. One of the most interesting machines from our point of view was the Dewoitine D.27 a single seater monoplane in the same class as the Fairey "Firefly". This is fitted with a 500 HP. (normal rating) Hispano Suiza 12 Mb. type engine and holds the 1000 Km. record with a speed of 179 M.P.H. The oil tank and cooler was built to form the circular spherical part of the nose the propeller cshaft passing through its centre. This is the only oil cooler used. The six carburettors of the Hispano had separate intakes each facing forward and formed by louvres in the cowling - See sketch (1). A Lamblin retractible radiator was used on the under side of the nose of the machine which was particularly neat and we should consider would offer much less resistance than the usual honeycombe radiator. This will be described later. This machine was the chief competitor of the "Firefly" in Belgium and on an appended curve (2) we give its speed and climb performance from which we could estimate approx. the increase in performance if fitted with an R.R. engine. It is in this machine that Dewoitines are going to install one of our "F" S. engines and one would imagine that this machine with a "Firefly" or "Fury" type nose which becomes possible with out engine and the increased engine output over Hispano would put up an excellent performance. The speed range appears very good - the present figures are 181 M.P.H. max. and a landing speed of 54 M.P.H. A print of the machine is appended. Print (3). Nieuport-Delage Type 62.D.1. This is a particularly attractive machine of metal construction beautifully finished. It is a single seater scout of a type that they call a sesquiplane. It is fitted with a Lorraine "Petrel" 500 HP. engine and has the nearest approach to the "Firefly" nose of any of the machines. Here again the airscrew being on the crankshaft centre line prevents the best nose shape being obtained. Six forward separate intakes formed in the cowling | ||
