To SY. From Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Sa. c. to Da.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} X 5840 Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Sa.4/W.27.3.30. X5840 SHOCK DAMPER CONNECTING LINK LUBRICATION. G.T.H. reported that his rear shock absorber ball ends on the connecting link were getting insufficient lubrication. We made some tests on the road and on a rig and found that the passages past pads B and C were insufficiently large, the result being that oil ran out at the neck of the top ball rather than pass down the inside of the tube. We found that by putting three flats as per sketch on B. and C. the trouble was overcome. We find that the grooves in the pad face are a very definite advantage. G.T.H. is now running with flats on the pads, and since the standard arrangement was not altogether satisfactory, we recommend that this modification should be incorporated in all damper connecting links.
