Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} from Mx.{John H Maddocks - Chief Proving Officer} Mx{John H Maddocks - Chief Proving Officer}10/T25.10.35. PHANTOM III - No. 33-EX. - PARIS SHOW. During the Demonstration runs the car gave little trouble. Brakes. I had to re-set the brakes on three occasions as they gradually got worse and the pedal went down to the boards. I re-set the ropes to get the maximum advantage of leverage. There is a considerable amount of ineffective movement or spring when the brakes are applied hard. Tappets. There was a great amount of tappet clatter from 80 m.p.h. upwards. Pistons. These knock starting up from cold and they could also be heard when the car had been standing for about half-an-hour and then re-starting. Smoking. Smoking from the exhaust got much worse during the run. This car was not fitted with the external pipes to the cylinder head. Steering. The steering was much worse for"joggling" on the French roads. There was an oil leak from the steering box. The leak showed itself by dripping from the ball end at the bottom of the pendulum lever, although the box had been modified to prevent oil leaking via the Bijur system. In this case it did not appear to be effective. Trouble was experienced with insufficient lubrication of the steering ball ends. Although oil was being delivered to the ball end, the lower part of the ball and pad was not getting any lubrication. contd- | ||
