Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} 236 BY.3/G.16.11.36. SCRAPER RINGS OF THE GROOVED TYPE. -------------------------------- We have put in a patent application for a modified form of scraper ring; when we went to the grooved type of ring, known as 'a perfect circle' I arranged to use drilled holes instead of long gashes, the effect of the gash being, of course, to throw the ring out of truth by giving a series of points of high pressure. We have now reverted to the gash because I understand the holes stop up; in order to overcome the gashing I have produced a modified design where the ring is grooved both inside and outside, the inside groove being considerably narrower than the outer one, and the two sides of the rings being joined together in the middle of the section, so as to form a letter 'H', and the gashing is therefore done on the neutral axis. I am arranging to get some rings made to the new design by the British Piston Ring Co. (Brico) and propose to make the experiment on either the 25/30 or the Phantom lll, or both. I would like to know which of the two engines the Experimental Dept. would like to try the idea out upon. By BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} | ||
