X5400 To- Per H.V. from E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} c. - Sgr. Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} Ms. By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} MHC. E.4/HP.24.6.32. J.3 - Luggage Grid. The following sets out the points raised by the Works, together with the W.W. comments on same, in connection with the inspection of J.3. Luggage Grid at W.W. No.1 - Works had affixed rubber strip and pads with staples instead of adhesive as specified. They have yet to obtain some suitable adhesive. WW. say they do not rigidly wish to restrict the means of fixing the rubber to adhesive, but would agree to using rivets if works prefer. No.2. - Works point out that lid{A. J. Lidsey} can be banged back on to body and cause damage to the coachwork. WW. agree that stops should be arranged to limit the maximum opening of lid.{A. J. Lidsey} No.3. - Works point out that side hinged members, when folded open as far as possible, come into contact with sides of rear apron, and it may cause damage. WW. agree that simple stops should be arranged to limit this movement. No.4. - Works found they were unable to find room for the threaded on rubber pads at the position marked "section CC" on the drawing, and they, therefore, moved them to a higher position. WW. agree to this modification. No.5. - Works find thumb screws on side hinged members foul tube of grid when being withdrawn. WW. agree more clearance should be provided at this point by D.O. No.6. - The design asks in two or three places where members are hinged together for rivets to be used which are headed up to the right degree for the requisite amount of friction in the hinge.
