Its supremely high mechanical properties, together with its high electrical and thermal conductivity when compared with other non-ferrous alloys, frequently make it possible to use much lighter sections in beryllium bronze than in any other material. Also, its mechanical properties are comparable with those of the finest spring steels, which unfortunately suffer the disadvantage of their lamentable liability to failure by corrosion or corrosion-fatigue. Beryllium bronze, on the other hand, combines with its phenomenal mechanical properties a high resistance to corrosion.

PHYSICAL & MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF BERYLLIUM BRONZE.

DENSITY.

Although pure beryllium itself possesses the extremely low specific gravity of 1.93, so very little of it is used in conjunction with copper that the density of the bronze is practically the same as that of copper itself, namely 8.93 or 0.32 lbs. per cubic inch.

THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY.

The thermal conductivity of fully heat-treated beryllium bronze (2.5 per cent Be.) is given below in terms of the thermal conductivity of electrolytic copper. For comparison the figures for other materials are also stated.

- At 18°C. -

Electrolytic Copper ............ 100 per cent.
Beryllium Bronze ............. 42 " "

Phosphor Bronze (5% Sn.{Mr Sanderson}) ........ 20 per cent.
" " (7.5% Sn.{Mr Sanderson})....... 16 " "
" " (10% Sn.{Mr Sanderson}) ....... 13 " "
Brass (70/30) ................. 28 " "
Iron (Pure) ................... 17 " "
Steel (0.1% C.) ............... 12 " "

Aluminium (Pure)............... 53 per cent.
Duralumin 'B' ................. 38 " "
