C O P Y. Oy3 - G.27820. August 27, 1920. Mr. Claude Johnson, Managing Director, Rolls-Royce Ltd., 15 Conduit St.{Capt. P. R. Strong}, London, England. Re: Accessories. Tungsten Contact Points. Dear Sir, In reply to my letter Oy3-G.28720 on Tungsten contact points, I have received a note from Mr. Tonge with enclosed reports from Mr. E.F. Clarke to Mr. Royce. These reports, however, are not quite sufficient for our needs, as it is necessary for us to tell the Independent Lamp & Wire Company in what way the Tungsten has failed on test, which Mr. Clarke's reports do not make clear. I would therefore be glad to hear from Mr. Clarke whether the points (a) Pitted. (b) Corroded. (c) Chipped; or in what way they were unsatisfactory. With particular reference to his first report of 29.4.20. in which he states that they have not found it possible to use some of the samples sent to them it was explained by me in sending these samples to Mr. Elliott that the method adopted by the makers was to braze a small cheese of Tungsten into a soft iron rivet. I believe it would be possible for us to handle the Tungsten rod sent to Mr. Elliott in exactly this way. Thanking you for a fuller report at your earliest convenience, we remain, Very truly yours, ROLLS-ROYCE OF AMERICA, Inc. Per (Sgd) M.{Mr Moon / Mr Moore} Olley.
