2006 23rd October, 1940. Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/RJH.9/ET. B. THOMAS, Esq., Messrs. Camm Metcalfe & Co., Town Hall Chambers, 87, Fargate, SHEFFIELD, 1. Dear Bernard, Thank you for your letter of the 22nd instant. I quite agree that our letter of the 18th instant was not well worded and enclose a further official letter correcting this matter. It is quite certain that, after putting the winch (or winches) into working order we should not undo this work. H.R. will not consider any payment at this stage, as the question of what use we are going to make of the winch is so unsettled. So far we have taken only the Thornycroft-Ford winch and have not decided whether we want the Chrysler. I removed the telephone and drum of telephone wire, as I thought these would be safer in the hangar. The attached letter lists the loose parts taken away with the winch. Everything else was left in the hangar. In anticipation of removing the Chrysler winch later, we took away its 6-volt battery with the intention of changing it. However we find it is completely useless so will either throw it away or return it to the Club. When we got the winch to Derby, we were astonished to find that the Ford cooling system was full of water. We cannot find any signs of freezing damage, so hope that there is none. We are doing the following work on the Ford engine: 1. New carburetter, 2. New induction pipe cum tappet cover, 3. Top overhaul, 4. Reline clutch and renew bolts and nuts of clutch plate spring drive, 5. New battery (the old one was missing). | ||
