14/2/24

C.J.

I am just starting off for Le CanadelHenry Royce's French residence. The 10% servo lever we waited for proved useless owing to a part having been fitted and brazed in wrong position.

The Clutch springs we carried, in order to deal with contingent slipping proved last night to be, unfortunately, of the same size and value as those now fitted, so we cannot improve that.

In R's letter to you of 9/2/24 he suggests that I have been decieved by (1) roads in France (2) detonations: this is not the case, I have been guided by the speedometer, not the roads, and I am using 20% benzol which keeps detonations within limits.

Also R.{Sir Henry Royce} suggests I am used to the old clutch and hence my criticisms of the one on my car, whereas my remarks referred only to the clutch on this car, in that you cannot change gear when it is really warm. With the car standing and engine running slowing the clutch continues to rotate.

Yesterday I gave a run in the 40-50 HP car (which late the evening before arrived from Marseilles) to Mr.Griffiths of Sunningdale, he is staying in this Hotel with his family and I have every reason to think that I shall get his order for a 40-50 limousine (body by Park Ward) after I have given his wife a longish run on Saturday or Sunday next.

I gave Miss Ryan & Arthur Gibbs a run in the mountains on the Exp.car which gave an excellent impression, also I have given a run to Miss Shepard Baron, one of the well-known tennis players.

PN.{Mr Northey}

After Monday next, as already stated, my address will be

L'Hermitage
Monte Carlo.
