(B) P.III WRAITH REPLACEMENT PROJECT.

(a) Engine re-design.

The modifications which we think could usefully be introduced were enumerated in Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}1/AP.20.8.37. Some of these have already been dealt with and are :-

(1) Simplified bottom tappets.
(2) 12" Long Clutch, improved flywheel.
(3) Wider main bearing crankshaft.
(4) Deletion of the oil cooler.
(5) Packard type balance weights.

The following still require design work:-

(1) Deletion of the outside spark plugs and two six-cyl. distributors and coils substituted for 12-cyl. distributors now used.

(2) Deletion of as much of the water heated exhaust bends as possible.

(3) Detachable filter of the by-pass type, i.e. "General" to be arranged by the side of the crankcase.

(4) Any simplification to the front drives to reduce cost and shorten the effective length of the engine.

(5) Provision for the engine to be used in a R.H. or L.H. drive chassis., i.e., starter motor to be possible either side of the crankcase.

(6) Provision for a harmonic type crankshaft damper.

(7) Arrangement for improved engine mounting.

(8) Monichrome camshaft with latest aero firing order.
