To CJ. from R.{Sir Henry Royce} -2- R6/G2/6/19 Contd. R to be fairly satisfactory. Those which were found to have rotted were not made by us, or under our control, but were constructed by the detachable rim makers. As regards Warland and other collapsable rims, I have never recommended these to be used by us, though it seems desirable to discuss with the tyre makers how a new tyre can be put on with less brute force. It is for this reason that I have asked you to send me various makes of tyres so that I may judge how much brute force is absolutely necessary for an average tyre, my impression being that a new Dunlop cover of the size we use on the big car, requires more strength and skill than is at the disposal of the average amateur. In conclusion, I quite agree that it is not the inspectors' duty to test devices other than those which the Works recommend for standardisation, otherwise endless confusion may arise. They (the inspectors) could, however, be used for proving the value of any fitting or device when it is actually decided or seriously recommended for standardisation. R.{Sir Henry Royce} | ||
