Dear Sir,

In answer to your letter of the 18th instant, with reference to your tensioners, the position is as follows:-

The sample tensioner left by you on your last visit has fulfilled the requirement of our letter of 20th November. This tensioner can, therefore, be taken as being covered by our Order No.29585 of 24th November last.

We now require two more tensioners like this sample mentioned (having two coil springs).

We have, therefore, two of your tensioners in use, and our tests to date show that we require both in action at the same time. One on the driving side and the other on the slack side of the chain. In conjunction with a small flywheel on the end of the camshaft, all chain oscillation above 1000 r.p.m. disappears. The cam balancer damps out the period at 1000 r.p.m.

The two tensioners now called for are required for a rig test on which the complete set-up will be subjected to high speed endurance.

We realise that the two tensioners we are testing at present have each a different design of linkage and we are unable to give you a figure of merit at present. We favour the idea of two coil springs, however, but we will probably be able to give you more information at a later date.

Yours faithfully,

For ROLLS-ROYCE LTD.
