RE. CHASSIS SELF STARTER CLUTCHES.

With reference to my memo. EP{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer}11/F10.5.20 on this matter to BY and Sft{Mr Swift}, we have now received a reply from you reference BY/C4/H.12.5.20 and from Sft.{Mr Swift} ref. Sft{Mr Swift}10/M12.5.20.

We note that Sft.{Mr Swift} will in future make quite sure that any faulty starter clutches we return, besides drilling the holes and modernising the bush, attention will also be given to see that the Jaws are made correct so that when engaged, the Journal will run true with the bearing. This point I was anxious to bring forward in my memo.

Since the standardisation of this modification, no cars have been delivered unless this modification has been made. The trouble we are now up against is that there are approximately 90 cars delivered prior to these instructions being issued, there being two which have failed in service. We are anxious, therefore, that this should be rectified as soon as possible.

You will remember that we put this proposition forward, and you replied as follows in your BY/Mtnl/W4.5.20:-

"Referring to your memo. EP{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer}/T4/F28420 we have
"discussed with Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} the modification you propose, and
"he does not consider it advisable at the present time
"to carry out the modification on the cars you mention.
"Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} considers it is quite probable that later on
"we shall have to change springs, and then we could
"have the two jobs done at one visit".

Do you think we should embody this modification at the same time as we are changing the rear split leaf springs, which job it is now arranged shall go ahead at once?
