DYNAMO FAILURES. 50-S-8.

Referring to EP{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer}14/H27923, before considering this memo in discussion with EFC, I made arrangements to carry out certain tests, with the object of proving whether by extreme brush bedding alone, it was possible to melt out an armature. EFC. has proved that this is the position - he is therefore suggesting to R.{Sir Henry Royce} that a special fuse, low enough to be of value in this respect, should be arranged in the field system of the dynamo, and therefore from the point of view of fusing we think we have made a distinct move by putting forward the proposal in question.

In regard to the second point, namely, the breaking of "A" terminal on the Dynamo, whilst we have followed the LeC. implicitly in our designs, upon finding that the type of terminal in question was faulty we modified it and arranged from chassis 401 onwards that the improved type of terminal which grips the insulation, as well as the wire, should be brought into service. I understand from Mr Davis that this is being done already. In regard to carrying this job out retrospectively, I have no objection to this if it is carried out on the ground that the changeover can be made when an overhaul is being made at our Works or the depot. I do not feel that this wire is the one which should give trouble under normal conditions in service, as it is not in the position to vibrate about, and is only likely to be broken, so far as I can see, by being put on and taken off a large number of times.

In regard to your proposal to use the improved type of terminal coil case, in this connection it is not very convenient, and since the cover of the coil case controls the wire against oscillations, one does not see that much advantage is to be gained by the proposal. If EFC. and Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} consider that it would be an improvement and will instruct us we will make the change.

The new terminal to the make and break wire was fitted to chassis from 125 onwards.
