Cylinder Liners.

In accordance with the request contained in your memo Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}6/KT.25.3.33., we have now made enquiries from Mr.Rackham, the Chief Engineer of the Associated Equipment Coy., in regard to the experiments they have made on cylinder liners in conjunction with the L.G.O.C.

They have carried out a considerable amount of research work and have satisfied themselves that the best results they have obtained have been with heat treated cylinder liners run in conjunction with R.R.53 alloy pistons of B.H.B. (Automotive Engineering Coy's) manufacture.

The iron they use contains a moderate amount of phosphorus (approximately 0.6%) in addition to nickel and chromium.

We would point out that this material is not essentially different from that we have already used supplied by Sheepbridge Stokes Centrifugal Castings Co, excepting that the best results have been obtained by hardening and quenching the liners to give a brinell of 400 - 500.

The material used by the L.G.O.C. was supplied by the British Piston Ring Coy. and we attach hereto a copy of the Associated Equipment Coy's specification No.21 covering this material.

We shall be pleased to obtain some of these liners if required.
