contd. -2- Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}2/LG29.8.21. ============ have been instructed and are in the process of being made. Gear Box. The gears were not good for silence. We noticed that the gears on this car have been instructed 20° angle; on Goshawk 1, which was excellent for silence, the gears were 14° angle. Rear Axle. This was not as good as we get on the 40/50 H.P. We have not had much chance, however, with these gears because there was no rig ready for testing them before fitting them to the axle. The most noisy features on the car, were, a "tinny" exhaust note and the suction noise from the Pilot Jet. The chassis was run with very temporary controls because so far none have been instructed. The flexibility is not very good. At present the pilot jet does not blend very nicely with the main carburetter. Whilst we were on the road the universal joint commenced to squeak. We found, when it was dismantled, that it was practically dry although we are certain it was lubricated before the car was taken on the road. We are carrying out tests with the Universal Joint on the Test Engine to try and find out how the oil gets out of these joints. We are very anxious, as soon as ever possible, to bring this chassis to W.W. because we think more rapid progress will be made if we could get Mr. Royce to try the car and us to demonstrate the minor alterations which we suggest are desirable. We expect to be able to bring Goshawk 11, fitted with open body and windscreen to W.W. in about a week or 10 days time. Contd:- | ||
