September 9th, 1927. Friday. Messrs Thos. Firth & Sons, Ltd. Norfolk Works, Sheffield. Dear Sirs, SPRINGS AND SPRING CLIPS. ----------------------- A standardization sheet is now being circulated at our Works, with the object of obtaining the necessary signatures to enable me to bring the R.R. type of clip into production as our standard type. I have no doubt at all but that we shall obtain the necessary signatures, and that therefore in the near future we shall be asking you to supply springs with forged eyes and clips of Rolls Royce type, in place of the Woodhead type of clip which, up to the present, has been for a long time our standard type. A question arose as to whether we should utilize forged clips, that is, clips forged to the "U" shape, or clips made from rolled bar. A further suggestion was put forward from your side to the effect that later, when the matter of standardization came into consideration, and production was imminent, that you might possibly like your Mr.Stansfield to come over to discuss the matter of spring design in regard to one or two small features, amongst them the question of whether a clip drop forged to shape, or one made from rolled strip, would be finally adopted. We think the time has arrived for the meeting in question, and further, that you should immediately give attention to the question of producing top plates with forged ends at your own works, and rounding off matters so that each detail of the spring would be produced at your own works, so that you were not dependent on any outside help for the production of the springs we require. If you will kindly fix up an interview at the earliest possible date, I will make the date in question Con. | ||
