Rolls Royce Ltd., Experimental Dept., DERBY. [Stamped text across body of letter]: TIN-SIZED Dear Mr. Robotham, I have posted to you, under separate cover, one half of the pair of aluminium bearings which you handed to me on the occasion of my recent visit, and which, you will remember, you asked us to make an attempt to tin coat. We find that the process which we have laid down for pistons was not at all suitable for the material of the bearing, but experimental work on strips cut from the other half have enabled us to determine the modifications necessary, and as far as we can see, the coating on the portion we have sent you compares with that which we obtain on pistons. The black spots are caused by gas bubbles where the action has been inhibited due to the adherence of the bubbles at those particular places. If the result in any way conforms to what you anticipate, we shall be pleased to carry out the process on a set of unused bearings any time you care to let us have them. Yours sincerely, C.N.Brooks. | ||
