Rolls-Royce Limited Derby, England Denver, Colorado November 11, 1938 Re: Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Std.1/MH{M. Huckerby} Attention Mr. C. S. Steadman, Experimental Department Gentlemen: You haven't had time to answer my letter of October 27 as yet, but as we just received yours of October 28 I thought I would answer it immediately. After looking at the remarkably fine record the "Ferogrip" belts made, we are naturally eager to get more information from you so that we can go after this new record. What we would like to do, of course, Mr. Steadman, is to have our Chief Engineer in belt development look over the test rig and the actual installation. That's what he would do in a problem of this kind in the United States, of course. But as long as that is impossible, we are going to ask your cooperation in giving us complete information. I think if we know a little more about what we are working on, it will help us tremendously. So, Mr. Steadman, my first request is this. Will you give us complete and exact information as to the rig on which you are testing these belts. How many pulleys are you using? What are you using for power? If you are subjecting the belts to a strain, as apparently you are, what are you using for that purpose? And -- well, just about everything you think would help us on this problem. One thing in particular that we are curious about is the pulley diameters. In your test memorandum you do not mention whether they are outside diameters or inside diameters. We have been assuming that they were outside diameters. Is this correct? Secondly, we would sincerely appreciate it if you could spare two sample Ferogrip belts, of production manufacture -- not experimental manufacture -- for us to test and examine. We will, of course, be glad to pay for these belts. In the closing paragraph of your letter you rather hit the nail on the head | ||
