ADJUSTMENT INSTRUCTIONS Having fitted the Thermostat, fill the radiator, first making sure that the valve is turned full open, in order to prevent air locks. Then set the pointer pin on the knob 2 or 3 graduations from the maximum temperature setting. This setting is approximately equivalent to 80° C., and will be found correct for the average engine. Should this setting be either too high or too low, it is a simple matter to modify the temperature by turning the knob in the increase or decrease direction, as indicated on the knob. Each graduation increases or decreases temperature 3 to 5 degrees Centigrade. For temperatures above 80° C. it is advisable to operate in conjunction with Smith's Dashboard Thermometer, which fits into the Smith “R.P.” Thermostat and indicates the exact temperature of the water in the cylinder block. Instructions in regard to fitting oversize or undersize Smith “R.P.” Adjustable Thermostats Oversize. Cut away existing hose, leaving two rings of rubber on engine and radiator pipes. Then fit new and larger bore hose over same, using the clips supplied by us. The new hose to conform in internal diameter to the external diameter of the Smith “R.P.” Undersize. Fit two rings of rubber, cut from new hose, on Thermostat ends; then fit existing hose over same, using clips supplied by us. Pump Impellor and Expellor. Type No. 2. Suitable for hose pipes up to 1 9/16" bore. Type No. 3. ” ” ” ” from 1 5/8" to 1 15/16" bore. Type No. 4. ” ” ” ” 2" to 2 1/4" bore. Note.—Type No. 5 is not suitable for pump circulation. Thermo Syphon. Type No. 2. Suitable for hose pipes up to 1 1/4" bore. Type No. 3. ” ” ” ” from 1 5/16" to 1 7/8" bore. Type No. 4. ” ” ” ” 1 15/16" to 2 1/4" bore. Type No. 5. ” ” ” ” 2 5/16" to 2 1/2" bore. It is impossible to provide models to exactly fit every size of hose. In the majority of cases, however, the clips will draw the hose in if the Thermostat is a little undersize. A slightly oversize Thermostat can easily be forced into the hose with the assistance of a little grease applied to the inside of the rubber hose. (See also instructions for fitting oversize and undersize Thermostats). To find correct bore of rubber hose, measure the outside diameter of the metal pipe to which top hose is fixed. Do not try to measure inside diameter of rubber hose, as in all probability it will be swollen. When ordering, state :— (1) Inside diameter of top rubber hose (i.e., between cylinder block and top of radiator). Measure metal pipe from engine : this is equivalent to hose pipe bore. (2) Whether pump or thermo-syphon water circulation. (3) Make, horse-power and date of manufacture of car. S. SMITH & SONS (Motor Accessories) LTD. CRICKLEWOOD, LONDON, N.W.2.
