Dear Mr. Bentley,

I hope to send you on Sat. or Sun. a modified drawing of the brush holder for alternating current motors, and also an alternative design of the self adjusting brake, which is more convenient for the crab motor than the one already sent. It also has some other virtues.

It will be possible to use with it a large scale indicator which will shew whether the automatic adjustment is going on correctly. This indicator appears to be a valuable feature of our crane brakes.

It would appear that in all cases we should use what I term the "straight lever railway brake" as the one most likely to give consistent results. This type is particularly desirable in the case of a brake each side of a wide crane, as in the Ford cranes.

Any form of brake which is self wrapping or dependent largely on the bedding of the shoes, varies greatly in effect from day to day - i.e. all self servo-ing brakes are most unreliable.

Yours faithfully,
F.H. Royce
