Pt.3/EP{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer}/29-11 -28 MELBOURNE. - 29th November, 1928 By/Derby C/Hm{Capt. W. Hallam - Head Repairs}/Derby✓ C/Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Derby C/EP{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer}/Derby C/Wmr./London C/CWB./London It has been pointed out to me repeatedly that with the present position of petrol tank filler it is impossible to entirely fill the tank if the car is standing in the gutter on the left hand side of the road - which is its usual position when filling up from a Bowser, which method of filling is general in this country. This because the angle of lean of the car creates an air-lock at the off-side end of the tank. Moreover, if a car which has been filled on a level floor pulls up in the gutter of the street on its own side shortly after filling, petrol spills out of the filler and is lost. For these reasons I would like to suggest that the position of the filler be changed from the near side end of the tank to the off-side end of the tank, the adoption of which procedure would obviate the above difficulties and would have no drawback whatever, so far as I can see, inasmuch as the length of hose on the Bowsers or other Petrol Pumps is invariably long enough to reach the off-side of the tank, even when there is luggage on the grid.
