COOLING ON ARMOURED CARS.

I have had a letter from Major Lewin describing a Trial up the Snake of one of our Armoured Car chassis. He complains of the temperature rising from 150°F to 201°F in the ascent of 3 1/2 miles, and compares our performance with that of another car which rose from 149°F to 186°F in the same place.

I have discussed this with Mr. Royce and he thinks the best plan would be for Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} Mr. Maddocks and myself to meet with the known facts before us, and see if we can make some suggestion for improving the cooling. He has no particular suggestion to offer at the moment, although he thinks if we could get the air away more quickly, it would be the most promising idea.

I understand that Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} has a chassis devoted to cooling at one time. Would he let us know if there was any outstanding facts discovered? If there is a marked plenum of air under the bonnet with engine running slowly? Did the cowling round the fan make any perceptible difference?

Would Mr. Maddocks say whether he thinks the test up the Snake, at which I understand he was present, was fair? Presumably the high speed fan pulley was on? The car was a chassis and not a complete Armoured Car?

Major Lewin wants to see me in London some day soon. Possibly Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} and Maddocks could make it convenient to meet me say at Conduit Street on the day I go up. We might make this Wednesday next if it is convenient to you and also to Major Lewin. No doubt you would wire me if not convenient and I will wire you if it does not suit Major Lewin.
