Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} 1204 To all Officials and Superintendents. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/LS.9/T.6.12.39. Conscription for the Armed Forces. I saw Mr. Musson, the Director of Planning War Production, at the Air Ministry on Friday last. He is in charge of arrangements for exempting those men from Military Service who are not exempted by the Schedule of Reserved Occupations, and who are required by industries engaged upon War work. We have asked for exemption for such men during the last calling up, and propose to do so as the various age groups are called up in future. Mr. Musson, however, did not seem very hopeful that our efforts would meet with any appreciable success, and it would appear that the likelihood is that the Schedule of Reserved Occupations will be the only criterion as to whether or not a man will be called up. This is just to warn you that you should not rely on our being able to retain any men below the scheduled age and you should consider what arrangements you propose to replace them.
