N.S. H.{Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} c. to "W" for Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} XC4 117 RECEIVED 2 DEC 1931 A10/H.1.12.31. re Chassis GXO/105 - Porters. Thank you for your H11/H.30.11.31. A new set of shock dampers has been fitted to this car, but in view of correspondence which has ensued since this was done, we are not quite certain if he has yet got what you wish the owner to have. This is the position:- (1) "W" sent us a new set of shock absorbers, as per their Hd{Mr Hayward/Mr Huddy}/SB{Mr Bull/Mr Bannister}19/KH.29.10.31 and your H1/H.30.10.31. (2) These shock dampers were fitted up between 2.11.31 and 5.11.31. (3) On 5.11.31 we received a copy of Works memo Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}11/AB.4.11.31, which did not quote a chassis number, but which had reference to this car, as it was the one which Hancock saw when he was here. In this memo it was proposed to send a set of split piston shock absorbers to us to be used "on such a car" (e.g. such a car as GXO/105). (4) We replied to Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} in our A18/H.5.11.31, saying that we were not sure if the special shock dampers mentioned in (1) above, which were fitted to GXO/105, actually had split pistons in them. Accordingly, we left it to "W" to decide whether or no to send us the new type shock dampers. (5) In Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}5/AD.18.11.31, it is stated that a set of the latest split piston type of shock absorbers are to be sent to us to fit to any car in respect of which we have any trouble. This memo adds that the shock dampers fitted to GXO/105 on the 2nd will certainly effect an improvement. (6) In Works' memo Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}1/AG.30.11.31, it is stated that these latter shock dampers were not the split piston type. The above will show the position. The point now is:- (a) Do you wish us to consider Mr. Porters' complaint as finished with? (b) Shall we keep the special shock dampers which are coming to us for fitting to the next obstinate shock absorber case, or (c) Are we to try to get Mr. Porters' car back for them to be fitted in place of those fitted on the 2nd ulto.?
