COPY. Folkstone, 22nd. March, 1922. RP. from Hy.{Tom Haldenby - Plant Engineer} S- GOSHAWK-11 We spent this morning getting our papers from the R.A.C. and after being delayed there rather longer than we expected, ran down here to catch the afternoon boat but on arrival found that the weather was so rough that the steamship people refused to ship any cars. We are therefore, compelled to wait until tomorrow. I expect Appleby will join us here before we cross over. Mr. Hy{Tom Haldenby - Plant Engineer}'s criticism. Our Comments. The car is running well so far as covering ground is concerned but there are several things which are not ideal but they are not defects inherent to the design. The engine pulls well but is rather rough also it "peters out" below 20 M.P.H. in similar manner to the previous cars, this we know being due to carburation. The timing wheels appear to be making more noise than at the start but I will observe this further before making definite comment. Ignition has worked well, oil pressure varies rather a lot with speed, but I think this is characteristic and not undesirable as long as the lowest pressure is reasonable. There is a tappet knock and I think these will develop until the ball ends of the tappet rods are really well bedded into their seatings. The starter works well and the gear is very good as regards silence. Dynamo and electrical system generally is working well and the rate of charge is good. The petrol consumption has worked out at 20 miles per gallon from Derby which I consider to be good as we have driven fast all the way. contd:- [Handwritten notes:] Now fitted with R.R- Carb with licor adjustment we at present know of. Now experimenting on S.U. carburettor and trying modifications to RR. Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} taking up with R.{Sir Henry Royce} asked Hy.{Tom Haldenby - Plant Engineer} to check if slipper still free. Trust we shall be able to produce these and obtain good bedding. | ||
