[Printed Letterhead] BY APPOINTMENT TO THE LATE KING GEORGE V VACUUM OIL COMPANY LIMITED GARGOYLE [Logo] TELEPHONE WHITEHALL 1010 (14 LINES) TELEGRAMS VACUUM . PHONE . LONDON CAXTON HOUSE . WESTMINSTER LONDON S.W.I [Typed Content] REFERENCE OTJ 11th October, 1938. Messrs Rolls Royce Limited, DERBY, England. Dear Sirs, For the attention of Mr. W. A.{Mr Adams} Robotham. We are sending you separately a five-gallon drum of oil marked EX.144 which is being forwarded in connection with your tests on special oils for running-in new engines. This is an oil made up on extreme pressure lines and we understand that it has been used successfully in the United States for some considerable time, where it is stated that the initial running of engines has been considerably improved by the use of this type of lubricant. We understand that there has been a distinct reduction in the stripping down of new engines after initial running-in and that piston and similar lubrication queries are practically eliminated. We have no experience of this type of oil in this country but as the lubricant is compounded with an E.P. base we have had corrosion tests made with bronze, aluminium and cadmium-silver bearings without adverse effect. In these instances the materials were immersed in the oil for a period of seven days at 200°F and no trace of corrosion was shown on standing. We are of the opinion, therefore, that this type of oil could be left in engines without adverse effect for coach-building or storage purposes. The physical readings of the oil are as follow :- [Printed Footer] UNLESS STATED OTHERWISE, ALL OILS ARE QUOTED AND INVOICED PER UNIT GALLON OF 9 LBS. AND ALL QUOTATIONS ARE WITHOUT ENGAGEMENT. [Handwritten Notes] [Top of page]: 1229. File. [Over date and addressee]: SWoL. We should try this, when opportunity occurs, for piston scuffing.
