There is a good deal of trouble and expense with reference to the front timing gears on the engine.
We are trying modifications, - the first being plain metal gears, which, according to Platford, run exceedingly well at slow speeds, and of course are not liable to change after they get on the road, but are not very quiet at high speeds.
The second idea is the skew gears which we thought of trying on the marine engine.
The third idea is that we should try a set of chains at the front of the engine. We are in communication with Hans Renold with this in view.
Since the introduction of the combined spring drive and slipper flywheel, I think that the slight vibration remaining on the front end of the crankshaft has little or nothing to do with the silence of these gears.
