r 111 3 To Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} Cricklewood, Nov. 2nd, 1936. Phantom III. Jack Barclays Phantom 3-AZ-28 came in here today, with further trouble with petrol pumps, four have been fitted so far and Sg.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} has been informed upon the last failure. I attained the following information from the driver. On Saturday he had been giving demonstration runs and after finishing got into a traffic jam when he was held up for some time. The engine was ticking over. It stopped and would not start. The driver found the petrol pump not working so he carried out the following. (1) Examined fuses. (2) Scraped the contact points. (3) Replaced cover etc. (4) Switched on pump worked engine started. I have given you this routine just to show that what actually happened was the time allowed for cooling down of the petrol pipe between the pump and carburetter as it is obvious that this failure was caused by heat under the bonnet. The pump being on the week side would not deal with the pressure in the pipe line. I have tested the pump taken off and it definitely is on the week side, and leaking from most of the plugs.
