PHANTOM 111 TAPPETS.

With reference to Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Gry.{Shadwell Grylls}5/MH.{M. Huckerby}29.4.38, it would not be possible to introduce simplified broached tappets to LeC.5667 before 101 in 'D' Series due to the time required for design and manufacture of the necessary tools.

This scheme provides a saving of £4. 10. 0d. per chassis over existing standard design, or a total of £450 for the 2nd. 100 chassis in 'D' Series.

Existing parts already released value £745 would be rendered scrap however by its adoption at 101 in 'D', and in addition new tools costing £100 would be required.

If the present design is allowed to proceed, this material will be practically absorbed by the end of 'D' Series, and the full economy of the final scheme for Wraith type tappets will become effective from the commencement of 'E' Series.

It will therefore be understood that the adoption of broaches, tappets, during 'D' Series would actually involve a loss of £395. 0. 0d. (£450 saving against £845 tool and scrap cost) and the scheme should not therefore be standardised.

It is understood that the object of the new tappets is purely manufacturing economy, and no appreciable reduction in Test Department or policy charges would be likely to accrue.
