PHANTOM LUBRICATION ALTERATIONS. X8980
X7980

R.{Sir Henry Royce} wishes to alter the lubrication instructions on the existing Phantom so as to call for less frequent oiling.

We are contemplating instructing that those points said to require lubrication every 500 miles or weekly, and every 1000 miles or fortnightly, should be increased to monthly, and we should like to have your views before writing a memo. to R.{Sir Henry Royce} at his request giving a resume of the proposed instructions.

We have some doubts as to the front axle and steering gear, but we believe that since these instructions were first instituted there have been improvements in the front axle tending to reduce the necessity of lubrication, that is to say, the bottom thrust bearing in an oil bath and the top roller bearing, and in addition spring loaded steering balls has greatly reduced the wear on those parts.

The shock damper connecting rods which at present are not spring loaded are also a doubtful point, but we might arrange for spring loaded ball ends to be fitted to these.

Though the shackles require frequent lubrication we think they should not require it as frequently as every week.
