We suggested and explained the reason in detail to MR.Elliott that this unit might be improved in respect of the correct time sequence of copper and carbon contacts, by a re-design. It is at present the case that the rapidity of action combined with the inertia lag of the carbon arm may, and does in some cases, result in the copper make actually taking place very slightly in advance of the carbon make. This causes sparking at the copper contacts with the result that they do not invariably maintain their good condition. The point has been demonstrated by the use of the electric chronograph. EFC. | ||
