Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} X3435 DEC 4 1920 RECEIVED A.T. c. to HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} EP{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer}23/E/3.12.20 RE. ENGINE COUPLING FAULTS ON TEST. We have had trouble with the nuts which hold the prongs on the inside of the coupling and which take up the end play actually coming adrift inside the coupling. According to the drawing, these bolts are not rivetted nor is there any spring washer used. We also find that couplings are built up so that the driving pin at one end of the coupling is not in line with the driving pin at the other end of the coupling as shown on the drawing. We have also had trouble of the end play of the coupling being controlled by the bolts fixing the end play web in position coming in contact with the blocks. Will you please give consideration to the following points :- 1. Definite instructions should be given for the driving pins to be in line. 2. Spring washers, or some better locking device should be used for the bolts holding the end play webs in position. 3. The barrel should be fixed to the coupling so that the studs holding this end play web are at right angles to the driving pin. It will be realised that the above bolts are fixed up with fibre washers, which is necessary in order to make the coupling oil-retaining, and it will be noted that the fibre is not satisfactory as regards packing, owing to its variation in thickness.
