Confidential. 1294 To: FJH{Fred J. Hardy - Chief Dev. Engineer}/MHR.{M. H. Rigby} from Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} 3/h.{Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} 2.2.44. c. to Wym.{G. Harold Whyman - Experimental Manager} c. to FJH.{Fred J. Hardy - Chief Dev. Engineer} Handwritten notes: EH Chassis Servo general. SERVO FOR SENIOR RANGE CARS. I am informed that the servos on Lp{Mr Lappin}'s car and Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}' car give more or less continual trouble and take a good many man-hours to service. The main trouble is 'shudder'. This is due to water and has, in the past, been due to oil leaking from the gearbox. I think we are justified in making the necessary design modifications to make the servo reliable and producing the necessary pieces to fit to these cars. I should like a report from MHR.{M. H. Rigby} on the present servo position so that we can talk round it and decide what drawing is required. I know that we have been contemplating a star spring on the servo for a long time. 3 B.50. servo has given remarkably little trouble in 85,000 miles and I should like to know in what way - if any - it differs from that on Lp{Mr Lappin}'s car.
