YOUR REF.

14th April, 1936.

Messrs. Rolls-Royce Limited,
Derby.

For the Attention of Mr. H.{Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} West.

Dear Mr. West,

With reference to the experimental detachable type Sparking Plugs which I sent you under cover of my letter of the 9th instant, we have found from some of our own dynamometer tests here that, if the shell and gland nut temperature in operation is high, the plug is inclined to "blow" between the insulator and its seating. Of course, such blowing completely upsets the heat characteristics of the plug and destroys the value of the test as far as the insulator in sinterkorund material is concerned.

As our main interest at this stage lies in the insulator material, I should be glad if you could have this "blowing" possibility carefully watched by your Engineer carrying out the tests, and, if he observes any blowing, let him have the plugs out and retighten the gland nut. The insulator is not fragile and he need not fear to tighten them quite vigorously.

The solution of this blowing trouble should not present any insuperable difficulty. I only mention the point at this stage because apparently the mounting of the insulator in the shell on the samples sent to you does not provide a complete solution.

Yours faithfully,
N.F. STOCKBRIDGE,
Managing Director.
