X 2894 cc - Mr. Bailey - Derby. Mr. Nadin - England Mr. Beaver Oy 13-E-91227 September 12th, 1927. Mr. E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} F.{Mr Friese} Clarke, Rolls-Royce Ltd., Derby, England. Dear Mr. Clarke: Re Ignition X2894 X4181 Thank you for your note regarding failure of American Bosch ignitions. About a year ago the Bosch Company went out of the ignition business entirely and handed over their rights to the De Jon Company with the understanding that they would produce for us exact duplicates of our present equipment. When it came down to an actual discussion, however, the De Jon Company were unable to do this and arranged to supply experimental ignition heads of their own type. These were run with satisfaction, and I am now in a position to submit proper proposal sheets for the change, with samples of the equipment which will be forwarded as soon as possible, so that we may have proper approval for the change. However, we do not regard this as a permanent equipment and shall undoubtedly be forced to produce our own battery ignition exactly on the lines of the Rolls-Royce but with a double distributor head and without magneto ignition. An experimental order for this change is going through and we shall shortly be calling upon you for sample parts from which to make up an experimental set. I should appreciate a short note from you covering the latest developments in the Rolls-Royce battery ignition, particularly with regard to the use of tungsten contacts. I may add that we do not propose to use the Rolls-Royce type of ignition coil which has a ballast resistance, as we have found the more modern type of armoured coil with the primary windings on the | ||
