RE. OIL LEAKS FROM ENGINES.

We still continue to receive complaints of oil leaks from engines, and in the cases referred to, customers complain about the engine becoming dirty after it has been in use for some time, the oil leaks being only slight and are coming chiefly from the various appertures of the crankchamber such as the tappets and the actuating rod for the magneto advance which passes through the crankchamber.

In the cases complained of I cannot say that these fittings are bad, hence my recommendations that some attention should be given to improve the ventilation of the crankchamber, which even with the 6-ring pistons, still seems inadequate.

Will Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} please give this point further consideration now that experiments are being carried out by him in connection with fumes from the crankchamber getting into the body.

Meantime, will you please give instructions that the various fittings of the crankchamber are made proper fitting face joints so as to avoid oil leaks as above referred to.
