| R.R. (100H) (M 96. 24.2.10) E.P. 6128. Valves and valve springs. (13) Mr Swetnam then submitted figures concerning a spring of this description for which he had previously received instructions. The stress with the valve shut in this spring was 40,000 lbs per sq. in. with a load of 42 lbs. and with the valve open, the stress was 50,000 lbs per sq. inch. with a load of 51 lbs; the outside diameter of the spring had been increased by .2". The Committee agreed that Mr Swetnam should instruc a suitable quantity of these springs with a larger diameter of coil, to be fitted with the ordinary stepped type of washer, with the bearing surface on the valve spindle proportionate to the diameter of coil. Mr Swetnam informed the Committee that he had already issued instructions for spring washers having an increased bearing surface on the valve spindle as previously arranged by the Committee. Mr Wormald promised to report later on the progress of these parts. | ||
