Analysis of different exhaust manifold designs regarding power loss and gas flow dynamics.

contd :- -2- The reason the std. manifold gives such a considerable power loss - in this case 10 HP. at 3200 r.p.m. or 13½% - we consider is due to the opposing direction of the gas flow from each of the two end cylinders. With the above mentioned experimental manifold, where each pipe from the exhaust ports leads into the down pipe in the general direction of the gas flow, the interference or opposition of flow is avoided. The experimental system which comes next in order of power output is Sch. 936 - shown here in outline. From the curves it will be seen that although the power given by this manifold is only slightly less than the previous one at the high speed it falls away at the lower speeds.
