than for stationary work, or work where the cells are subjected to smoother movement, e.g. on a yacht.

We have at the moment an Alkaline battery made by Batteries Ltd., Redditch, upon which we have carried out a number of bench tests, and which, from this point of view, shows up quite satisfactorily. This battery is also shortly going on an experimental car for starting, lighting and ignition work. If a starter motor is part of the equipment of the car to which it is proposed to fit the Edison type cells, then owing to the higher internal resistance of this for a given capacity as compared with the lead cell, the same liveliness of starting will not be experienced. Even only from the point of view of lighting and ignition no weight would be saved for the same capacity, and for the slightly greater capacity necessary for the same efficient starter motor operation rather more weight of battery would be required.

On the whole we cannot at the present time recommend the substitution of the Edison type of battery for the standard Exide battery which we supply, and we are inclined to think that if the gentlemen in question makes the change, although he may be satisfied with this at first, he may later have cause to regret this.

One must bear in mind all along that owing to the far greater cost of the Edison battery for the same work, this must be expected to last from two to three
