Re Whittle Belts. - M5/G14415.

With reference to Hans Renolds chain, we return the sample, and are sorry to say that it will not suit our purpose, being too heavy and expensive. We have now altered the scheme until the horse power is very much less. The chain speed, however, will be equally great. We should want it to transmit .5 HP between two pulleys of the best suggested diameter, the two shafts running at 1600 revolutions, and we believe we shall be able to arrange the drive horizontally, as we fear that a vertical drive would not be satisfactory unless a jockey pulley were used, or the machine were held up by a spring of high rating, so as to keep the slack side of the chain free from absolute looseness. We will send further particulars in the course of a few weeks. In the meantime we think the vee belt will probably work out quite reliable and lighter, which latter is the chief consideration, and as we should probably want 100 sets, we fear that a price anything like £4 would be quite prohibitive. We want a drive, the cost of which would not exceed £1, i.e. the lightest possible scheme for aero work.
