47060 To By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} c. to RHC.{R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer} Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Swdl.{Len H. Swindell}2/KW.17.9.34. Phantom Self-Adjusting Tappets. Actual detail drawings of the eccentrics and rocker shafts now running 10,000 miles test on 28-EX have not, as yet, been issued. In doing so the following details should be included :- (1) Rocker shafts in SZN not hardened and copper deposited to a thickness of .001 that is, .002 on the diameter and finally polished. Otherwise the shafts are as E.84407. (2) Eccentrics complete in cast-iron (no white-metal linings) and detailed to give a final diametrical clearance on the coppered shafts between the limits of .001 and .002, otherwise the eccentrics are to E.84413/4. (3) Selective assembly of the plungers (E.85559) in the plunger casings (E.85552/3/4/5) for diametrical clearance limits .0005 and .001. These limits must be adhered to throughout the entire length and depth of the plunger and plunger bore. (4) Each plunger valve (E.85560) should be tested on its seat in the body (E.85559) after assembling perfectly dry, to the following conditions - (a) This valve to be tight when tested with an air pressure of 1 1/2 lbs/sq.in. (b) Valve to open under a suction of 1 - 2 lbs/sq.in. (5) The plunger return springs (E.84530) which are made of rectangular wire should be trimmed up on the edges of the wire in order to prevent bits coming off, which are sufficient to cause the plunger to stick. (6) Other than (E.85577) replacing Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}1470, but retaining the .031 dia. hole drilled in the rocker end, the complete set of tappets are to RHC{R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer}/WSC.{W. S. Cassel}3/EP{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer}/29.8.34. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/L.H.Swindall. | ||
