To Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} from Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} X8770 Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}3/LG3.10.27. SPORTS MODEL. X8774 In view of BJ7/E30.9.27., we recommend that the conference you suggest should take place as soon as possible. The Sports car however has now got involved with standard Phantom development. If it was decided to scrap the Sports programme we do not see that it would make the least difference to the modifications which are contemplated. The chief items which it is intended to alter are :- (1) ENGINE CRANKCASE AND CRANKSHAFT. The high speed running has shewn up a definite weakness in the crankcase. If, as it is anticipated, we can make a Phantom engine which will run smoother at higher speeds, it means that the std. Phantom will be improved because it will allow us to use a lower gear ratio and still get the same smoothness with improved acceleration and performance. (2) MODIFICATION TO SPRING DRIVE AND SLIPPER FLYWHEEL. The present scheme on the std. Phantom is by no means free from trouble and whatever improvement we can make to this unit will be equally as beneficial to the std. car as the Sports car. (3) IMPROVED CYL: HEAD. The improvements which come about by the cyl. head which are - less detonation, less explosions in the silencer, better slow running and reduced tendency to fire after being switched off, are all as necessary to the std. car as the Sports car. contd :- | ||
