SECRET.

CJ11/E4/3/25.

Please refer to my memo. originally addressed to you but during your absence dealt with by BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} CJ1/E24/2/25, re 'India' chassis, from which you will note that, as regards 'India' chassis, it was laid down that there should be no further alterations unless on the advice of a special committee at Derby standardisation sheets for such alterations were signed by London.

I hope you will make this perfectly clear to Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}

As regards the EAC, exactly the same regulation should apply.

An EAC chassis is now undergoing a 10,000 miles test and must be regarded as the exact model which is to be copied for the "W" series and no alterations must be made in the design as illustrated by this 10,000 miles chassis as it stands at the present time, without a standardisation sheet signed by London.

In order to make the matter clear, it would be as well if there were prepared at once, as regards 'India' a standardisation sheet describing the 11 modifications which are set out in BY1/H23/2/25 and this should be signed as the 'India' chassis which is authorised for manufacture, in parallel with the experiments of the Experimental Department and for eventual delivery to London subject to the running of 10,000 miles being successfully completed.

This standardisation sheet would make it clear what is authorised and that any modifications or additions to the design as set out in the standardisation sheet must be the subject of additional standardisation sheets.

In the same way a standardisation sheet should be prepared describing accurately the EAC chassis which is now undergoing the 10,000 miles trial and in like manner any departure from the design thereby illustrated must be made the subject of a standardisation sheet.
