X8070 SP{Mr Spinney}/HS{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/ RECEIVED MAR 18 1927 Oy1-E-3527 March 5, 1927. Mr. F.{Mr Friese} H.{Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} Royce, Rolls-Royce, Ltd., London, England. (Copy for attention of Mr.Hives " " " " Mr.Haldenby " " " " Mr. Nadin " " " " Mr. Ross) Dear Sir: Re Exhaust System - Section 5230 We have received Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} report of February 17th on Induction Pipe experiments in which it is concluded that the present scheme is best. Since the choke valve is the principal difficulty with the present scheme we want to bring to your attention a suggestion made by Mr. Thorne Donnelley, to use fused quartz bearings on the choke valve spindle, in connection with a rustless- or stainless-steel spindle. Mr. Donnelley has told us that bushings of fused quartz can be obtained to accurate limits, with a steel shell for pressing in place, and that they are being introduced into the chemical industries for conditions similar to the choke valve, and under light loads are quite free from sticking or squeaking even at very high temperatures. We are making inquiries for a source of supply, and will advise you if we have any success. Yours very truly, Maurice Olley MO/E | ||
