16G9 SECRET To EY. Copy to Dr. Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} RMC. HPS.{Horace Percy Smith - Experimental Factory Mgr} E/Ev.{Ivan Evernden - coachwork}2/MN.13.1.37. LES.{Ivan A. Leslie} Independent Front Suspension - Wraith II Steering Pivot. ------------------------------------------------------ The scheme for leading the oil into the base of the steering pivot on Wraith II shown on N.Sch.4813 has been criticised in that it would appear to be difficult to bend back the pipe attached to the side steering lever when wishing to disconnect the olive joint in the thrust plate on the stub axle. The design shown has been used on a number of experimental designs and was produced originally to deal with a complaint that the scheme now used on our standard cars was unsatisfactory, it was said that the stand pipe which is sweated into the set screw of the lubrication banjo became eccentric with the pivot pin and was broken off. The scheme with a banjo and stand pipe, however, is still used on our cars and appears to be satisfactory. Because it would also appear to be cheaper than the scheme shown on Wraith II we have made a scheme applying it to that car and shown on N.Sch.4996 herewith. All the pieces are existing parts. Should, however, it be desired to return to the floating and spring loaded stand pipe of N.Sch.4813, it would be possible to do so using a banjo instead of an olive joint for the oil pipe but we should only wish to do that if the scheme which is now standard on the Bentley and shown on N.Sch.4996 proves to be unsatisfactory, as this latter scheme is obviously the cheaper.
