Dear Mr. Robotham,

Thank you for your letter of the 22nd instant, enclosing drawing for your Bentley main bearing.

We should very much like to have a go at the job but there is one point that wants clearing up. The drawing shows a big end bush and we are working accordingly, but your letter speaks of it as a main bearing.

Now, if it is a big end bush, I would like to suggest very humbly that the way we make big end bushes, with the little experience we have had, would probably be better than the way you do it according to your drawing. As I see it, you finish bore the two halves together. Now we have just been doing some big end bearings for Ford and I am hoping we shall get the order for quantities. At present I understand all the engines they are making are for the Admiralty; I think it is the "V" engine. They are paying about 5/- each for cadmium nickel and apparently it is not too satisfactory.

I am putting the whole thing quite fairly before you and obviously you will keep all this under your hat, but it is about the same size bearing as yours. Can you afford to pay a figure like that?

Now the question of machining them in two separate halves instead of one comes to this. You get absolutely concentric bearings and, on the Ford, machined in separate halves as we propose it should be done, every half section
